Remaining in Fragments: A Collection of Visual Memory

This project explores the fluidity of memory and its visual form. I am interested in the way memory binds us to the past and holds our experiences, and how we further connect with memory through the objects and images we choose to preserve. Using collage and painting, I create fragmented pieces that represent the fragmented notion of memory.

My subject matter draws from my own photos, family photographs, journal entries, recordings, sketches, stories, and of course, memories. I deconstruct these moments and re-assemble them as collages, relating them to one another with a focus on the connection between physical location, emotion, and the passage of time. I then paint an interpretation of collages onto canvas, further abstracting them and creating metaphors of my own remembrance. While some relate two memories directly,  others relate a multitude of moments. Through these pieces, I aim to encompass the non-rational elements of memory that connect us to what we consider to be ‘home.’
